Every year, high school students face the challenge of connecting classroom learning with real-world careers. For students in Upper St. Clair High School's Honors STEAM Innovation and Consulting Course, EAFab’s student outreach program provided a unique opportunity to bridge that gap.

At AISTech 2026, the steel industry’s premier trade show, these students were invited to explore the steel industry firsthand and discover career paths they might not have considered before.

USC's Honors STEAM Innovation and Consulting Course

The Honors STEAM Innovation and Consulting Course is a unique course where the students are paired with local companies to work as problem-solving consultants, applying Human-Centered Design strategies alongside more traditional analytical methods to address the real-world challenges the company is facing. EAFab is proud to be an 11-year corporate partner of this program, with countless solution implementations.

This long-running corporate partnership became the main catalyst for establishing an internal committee at EAFab focused on Student Outreach. The committee's goal is to engage local students in the field of steel from a young age and to continue innovating and improving our initiatives to ultimately inspire future steelmakers.

STEAM Students in Action at AISTech2026

EAFab’s Student Outreach Committee took this year's program learning beyond the classroom by inviting the students to AISTech 2026: a massive trade show showcasing the latest in global steel manufacturing, technology, and innovation.

Although EAFab was an exhibitor, the AISTech trade show spans hundreds of booths and exhibits, each offering a glimpse into different facets of the steel industry. For the students, roaming the floor was not only a unique opportunity but an active learning experience into the various sectors and specializations of the industry. Walking the show floor, students encountered:

  • Steel production equipment solutions

  • Advanced automation technologies

  • Sustainable steelmaking initiatives

  • Networking opportunities with industry professionals

This hands-on exposure gave the students a sense of the professional world they will soon enter, and the complexity and scale of the steel industry and the diversity of people it employs. It also sparked curiosity and motivation by showing how the skills they are learning in their STEAM course can directly lead to meaningful careers.

Preparing for University and Beyond

The transition from high school to university can be daunting. EAFab’s partnership with the Upper St. Clair STEAM program attempts to ease this by:

  • Presenting pertinent challenges for students to address during the program

  • Developing interdisciplinary skills through a structured meeting schedule

  • Providing opportunities to engage in a real-world business environment

  • Establishing honest communication feedback channels, as we would with a colleague

  • Promoting continuous learning and flexibility in a rapidly evolving field

For high school seniors preparing to go to college, this program provides them with experiences that foster confidence and clarity. Working with corporate partners allows them to explore their intended career paths, enabling them to confidently pursue a specific field or realize they might be better suited for a different specialization with the necessary time for them to pivot.
