In 2026, the United States Power Generation mix reached approximately 4,430 billion kWh (TWh). This energy is used to convert primary energy sources (such as fossil fuels, nuclear, and renewables) into reliable electricity for our communities, businesses, and industrial operations across the nation. From conventional power plants to emerging energy technologies, power generation facilities require durable infrastructure designed to withstand demanding operating conditions, heavy loads, temperature variations, and continuous service requirements.

Renewable energy source: wind turbines.

There is a growing demand for reliable electricity sources in the United States due to rising electrification, electric vehicles, heat pumps, and artificial intelligence (AI) data centers. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the leading primary energy sources used as input to power generation facilities are as follows:

  • Natural Gas: Lead source, accounting for approximately 41% to 43.4% of total generation.
  • Nuclear: Steady baseload power, making up about 18.1% of generation.
  • Coal: Declining due to retirements and gas prices, dropping to roughly 15% to 17%.
  • Renewables: Combined wind, solar, and hydro account for about 24% to 26% of utility-scale generation.

Converting Primary Energy into Power Generation

Each primary energy input has its own converting process. For example, the standard thermal and nuclear power process differs from that of hydroelectric, wind, or solar photovoltaic systems. Once receiving its respective input, power generation facilities depend on specialized equipment and structural systems that support efficient energy production and long-term reliability. Components such as generators, vacuum chambers, bridge structures, baffle foundations, and other heavy fabricated assemblies play an important role in managing operational forces and supporting the performance of power generation.

"Most U.S. and world electricity generation is from electric power plants that use a turbine to drive electricity generators. In a turbine generator, a moving fluid—water, steam, combustion gases, or air—pushes a series of blades mounted on a rotor shaft. The force of the fluid on the blades spins (rotates) the rotor shaft of a generator. The generator, in turn, converts the mechanical (kinetic) energy of the rotor to electrical energy. Different types of turbines include steam turbines, combustion (gas) turbines, hydroelectric turbines, and wind turbines."
